Leisa Tanner is currently in private practice at Brisbane Specialist Suites where she works alongside Dr Catherine Llewellyn, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist.

About Leisa

As a social worker, I completed my Bachelor of Social Work in 1991 and since then have gained over 20 years of practice experience as an individual and family therapist in a range of settings including Child and Youth Mental Health (seven years), as a children's therapist in the domestic violence sector (four years) and child protection.


I have  also completed a Graduate Certificate in Advanced Family therapy in 2002 and whilst employed at Child and Youth Mental Health co-ordinated and supervised a family therapy team for a number of years.

For the past nine years I have worked in private practice offering individual and family therapy and supervision to other practitioners. As well as providing therapy, I have been employed as a family therapy tutor at the School of Social Work UQ and as a trainer in family therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy to organisations such as Act for Kids , The Division of General Practice and Adult Mental Health. 

As a therapist, my areas of interest and experience include

-       Provision of both brief and long term therapy to primarily adolescents and women who present with a range of mood disorders including anxiety, depression, complex trauma as well as interpersonal issues such as grief and loss

-       All aspects of eating disorders including Anorexia, Bulimia and other forms of disordered eating

-        
Provision of individual and family therapy to children and adolescents who are experiencing depression, anxiety, schooling and adjustment issues, family conflict or who may be engaging in self harm or other at risk behaviours

-        Supporting individuals who have a chronic health diagnoses and complex pain disorders and who are experiencing adjustment  issues and grief and loss

-       Supporting mothers experiencing postnatal depression and/or who are concerned about a disrupted attachment with their infants.

As a therapist I draw upon therapies such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Interpersonal and Attachment Based Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Structural Family therapy and play based therapies with children. I work closely in partnership with Dr Catherine Llewellyn, child and adolescent psychiatrist, a number of other child and adolescent psychiatrists, General Practitioners who have an interest in mental health, as well as speech pathologists, psychologists and occupational therapists. A specialist referral to these practitioners can be arranged if necessary.

I am an accredited member of the Australian Association of Social Workers and I am also registered as a Mental Health Provider. Patients may be eligible for a rebate through the Better Access  Medicare Scheme. To arrange a referral please contact either myself or our receptionists on ph 3831 8700.
